PUDUCHERRY: The Congress workers on Monday raised slogans against Chief Minister N Rangasamy over the law and order situation in the Union Territory when he arrived at the Indira Gandhi statue at Natesan Nagar for paying tributes to the former prime minister on the occasion of her 27th death anniversary here on Monday. The agitators wanted the Centre to intervene and ‘save Puducherry’ from rowdies and criminal elements.Later, several Congress leaders including former CM V Vaithilingam, former ministers Pethaperumal, Namassivayam, Kandasamy and PCC chief A V Subramanian joined the cadre to stage a road blockade. A few of them also shouted slogans against education minister PML Kalyanasundaram, who allegedly used a proxy to write his SSLC supplementary examinations on his behalf.Chief Minister Rangasamy and his ministerial colleagues, including Kalyanasundaram, went ahead and garlanded the statue. After top police officials rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesting Congress leaders, they dispersed peacefully after paying floral tributes to the late Prime Minister.Later, Vaithilingam told reporters that Puducherry has become a haven for rowdy elements due to the inaction of the police. It may be recalled that an AINRC loyalist, Arumugam, was recently murdered by a gang near the chief minister’s residence.
