Vidisha: AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh on Monday called Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for public debate over development works carried out during his tenure and that of the erstwhile Congress government.
"Chouhan likes to talk about the developments during his tenure and claims nothing was done during my stint as chief minister. In view of this, I would like to throw a challenge to Chouhan to come for an open debate," Digvijay said at a party rally in Vidisha. Digvijay alleged that BJP had falsely implicated former state finance minister Raghavji on charge of sodomy. "My sympathies with Raghavji who had to spend more than 30 days in jail," the senior leader said. "All good things done when I was chief minister were undone after BJP came to power. These included supply of free electricity to farmers and payment of unemployment allowances to the youth", he said.
Digvijay alleged that BJP had promised waiving off loans up to Rs 50,000 for farmers in 2008 but has failed to keep the promise after coming to power. Assembly elections are due year-end in the BJP-ruled state. "If Congress comes to power after assembly polls, our government would definitely waive off loans for farmers up to Rs 51,000," he said.
Madhya Pradesh Congress poll campaign committee chairman Jyotiraditya Scindia alleged that no development was carried out even in Vidisha constituency "which gave a prime minister (Atal Bihari Vajpayee), one chief minister (Shivraj Singh Chouhan) and the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha (Sushma Swaraj)".
Union Minister for Urban Development Kamal Nath alleged during the BJP rule since December 2003, the number of industries opened in the state is lesser than those closed down. "Chouhan government failed to carry out development works despite having received Central funds six times more than what was released by NDA to erstwhile Congress government under Digvijay Singh," he said. The Leader of the Opposition Ajay Singh, state unit Congress president Kantilal Bhuria and party general secretary in-charge of Madhya Pradesh Mohan Prakash also spoke on the occasion.
