New Delhi: Days after actor Naseeruddin Shah’s comments on mob lynching, violence and concern for the well being of his children led to protests against him, Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Tuesday said that his party is “determined” to ensure safety of those people who feel unsafe in “today’s India”.
Naseeruddin Shah, referring to the Bulandshahr violence, had expressed concern that the death of a cow was given more importance than the killing of a policeman in Uttar Pradesh.
“For good people who feel unsafe in today’s India there are some of us who are determined to ensure your safety: not for alone but for all humanity and the world,” tweeted Salman Khurshid.
Shah also expressed concern over the safety of his children, who he said have not been brought up as followers of any particular religion.
Following his comments, the Ajmer Literature Festival was forced to cancel Shah’s keynote address amid protests by right-wing groups.
Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the veteran actor need not feel scared as tolerance was in the DNA of the country and that a mountain was being made out of a molehill.
"There is no need for his (Shah's) children to be scared. The country is moving ahead on the basis of the Constitution and in a democratic country, there is no need to fear anybody," said Naqvi.
