What clinched the battle in favour of the Travancore forces were the intelligent moves of the naval units led by the fisherfolk. The State Government should take steps to create awareness about the place of this battle in the nation’s history, he said. Archbishop M Soosai Pakiam opined that the battle is yet to get its true place in history. The decisive role played by the fisherfolk in the battle is testimony to their courage and commitment, he said.The ‘Smrithi Yatra’ from the Bishop’s House to the memorial column in Colachel, now in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, was flagged off by Uthdradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma and the Archbishop.  Memorial committee chairman John Vinetius presided over the function. Vicar-General Eugene Pereira among others attended.  The battle between the Travancore forces and the Dutch Navy was fought on land and water on August 10, 1741.
