New Delhi: Doctors are still unclear about the white powdery substance found on Rahul Mahajan. Earlier likelihood of this mysterious drug being cocaine was high.
Medical experts warn that the common practice of snorting cocaine and drinking alcohol can lead to deadly consequences.
Director Critical Care, Fortis Hospital Dr Amit Varma said, "Cocaine and alcohol together are potent identities, mix them together and your risk of dying goes up to 30 per cent".
An hour after cocaine is used, the risk of a heart attack goes up 24 times and cocaine addicts are seven times more likely than non-users to suffer heart attacks. And once the level of cocaine reaches a toxic level in the body, everything shuts down.
Mainly it's the heart - arrhythmia, then respiratory failure, or lungs will shut down, third is an effect on the skin called laser constriction. All skin and extremities are cold and clammy, brain effects, bleeding in the brain, finally kidney shut down, so pretty much all-systemic body shut down.
In this case, doctors are not yet sure what Rahul Mahajan took, but if he was on anti-depressants, then mixing his medication with large amounts of alcohol could lead to seizures, erratic heart rate, as well as increase depression and panic symptoms and increase the risk of suicide.
Until a conclusive toxicology report comes through, doctors deal with symptoms as they appear. Cocaine, being a lifestyle drug, is also often abused along with other drugs, with fatal effects.
