BNAGALORE: After a spate of Information Technology Parks, Namma Bengaluru is now all set to get a BioTech Park Bangalore Helix soon. American based Alexandria Real Estate Equities, will initiate the project on July 11, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa announced on Wednesday.
Pipped to be one of the biggest such parks in the country, Principal Secretary, Department of IT/BT, Vidyashankar said that the company had been given a 60year lease on the land. Speaking after an award presentation by The Vision Group on Science and Technology (VGST) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Yeddyurappa shared that the park, which would be developed in two phases, would take 18 months to complete and `500 crores would be invested initially. The park which is expected to cover a total of 109 acres (both phases), would initially cover nearly 1.5 million square feet on 59 acres of land and later another 3 million square feet will be covered, taking the total to 4.5 million square feet. His announcement comes after the Chairman of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister Prof C N R Rao's words seeking more importance for infrastructure in science institutions. Yeddyurappa, in a rather jovial fashion said, "The government treasury is full and should be utilised efficiently." Expecting misinterpretation, he clarified that the treasury was not overflowing, but funds and support for science was readily available.

The CM also agreed to take cognizance of the recommendations submitted by Prof Rao and VGST, he said that the government would implement the same. "One acre of land, currently held by Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy, would be given to JNCASR on lease for the purpose of setting up a Nano laboratory", he said. 76 researchers, teachers and institutions were given awards for their contribution towards the promotion of science and related activities.
