HYDERABAD: The 802 convicts in the Cherlapally central prison at Hyderabad have recently registered their names to get Aadhaar cards and about 1,200 remand inmates would also register their names for Aadhaar cards in a couple of weeks.
The prison is the first of its kind in the country to register inmates' names for the Aadhaar cards. A fivemember team of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) came to the Cherlapally prison with all the equipment and registered the inmates' names, said Cherlapally prison superintendent K Srinivasa Rao.He added, the idea behind this unique initiative was to ensure that the prisoners can receive all the benefits of the Aadhaar cards upon their release. In the first phase, all the convicts were registered for the cards, and the facility would be extended to undertrials in the next three weeks, he said. Although the prisoners will get their unique identity cards while still in jail, their families will have to enrol for it separately in their respective locations. The inmates were informed that they will get cards in a month. While 80% of the inmates gave prison address as their postal address, others gave their home address. "Prisoners in other central prisons across the state will also get the opportunity to enrol for the cards soon as the government has planned to complete the project in state by end of 2013," he informed. Meanwhile, so far, 2.20 crore individuals across the state have registered their names for Aadhaar cards including the AP governor.
