Chambakkulam ‘chundan vallam’ of the Thykoodam Boat Club bagged the T K Ramakrishnan Ever-rolling Trophy in the snake boat category of the Champakkara boat race here on Sunday.
In a thrilling final, the oarsmen of Chambakkulam edged out Cheruthana vallam of the Devamatha Boat Club, which finished second in the race.
In the A-category of the ‘odi vallam’, Thaniyan of the T B C Thanthonithuruthu Boat Club, won the race, beating Sree Guruvayoorappan of the Ragam Boat Club, Valanthakad, to win the Pandit Karuppan Memorial Ever-rolling Trophy.
In the B-Category, Jibi Thattakan of the Kurumkotta Boat Club bagged the first winning the P M Rajesh Memorial Ever-rolling Trophy while Mayil Vahanan of the Vivekananda Chandrika Boat Club, Panambukadu, came second.
A total of 19 boats, including four ‘chundan vallam’, took part in the race. The function was inaugurated by Minister for Excise and Ports K Babu. Mass drill was conducted under the instruction of S Gopalakrishana Pillai, Alappuzha. P Rajeev MP and Deputy Mayor Bhadra, spoke. Maradu municipal chairman T K Devarajan and Kochi corporation former opposition leader A B Sabu presented trophies to the winners.
The programme was jointly organised by the Maradu municipality, Eroor-Perikkad Boat Club, Kochi Corporation and the Tripunithura municipality.
