New Delhi: A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's meeting with PDP leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the Centre is said to be considering a move to set up a committee to study the issues of troop reduction in civilian areas and repeal of anti-terror laws in Jammu and Kashmir.
The revelation comes just two days before the political affairs committee meeting on Sunday when the party is likely to decide on the future course of action on its threat to withdraw support to the alliance government in Jammu and Kashmir.
PTI on Friday quoted senior PDP leaders as saying that the Prime Minister had agreed in principle to the formation of the committee that will review the security situation in the state and take a decision on whether to reduce troops in civilian areas where the level of violence is low.
The report didn't name any of them. The move to form the committee follows a request for troop cuts and withdrawal of the laws made by the PDP. PDP is an ally of the state's ruling Congress in Jammu and Kashmir.
The final shape of the committee and its terms and conditions will be finalised soon, the leaders said. The committee, they said, would look into the possible withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from areas where there had been an improvement in the security situation.
Raising of new battalions of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, which will exclusively deal with militancy, was also likely to be discussed by the panel.
