The governor of the place during the French rule, Andrew Julian started the institution in 1823.

We find remnants of foreign rulers in buildings and architectures they created across the country. One of those is the Puducherry Legislative Assembly. Let us delve into the history of the building, taking a small glimpse of our past. During the French rule, the building of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly was constructed as a medical college. It was called Gallo de Medicity Pondicherry. The governor of the place during the French rule, Andrew Julian started the institution in 1823. As per the information given, in the first year of the college, certifications in the Medical Assistant Male Nurse were started. Only the French were allowed to take the course. After a while, the admissions were extended to the citizens of Puducherry.

Later, the institution introduced a three-year medical course. According to more information, it functioned as a medical institution till 1952. When Puducherry became a part of India, it became functional again by 1954.

A French Ambassador named Le Comte Stanislaus laid the foundation stone of the institution at Gorimedu, in 1959. By 1962, the construction work for the place was completed and it was shifted here. In 1963, the original building of the institution was converted into the Legislative Assembly. Since then, they have been functioning from the place.

More information states that before the allocation, the assembly meeting used to take place on the floor of the municipality office, which was located at the Puducherry Beach Road. As per the reports given, the old municipality building collapsed and a new building was constructed in its place. The Puducherry Assembly building itself is very old so, reportedly the government is thinking of constructing a new one.

The Representative Assembly became the Legislative Assembly of Puducherry on July 1, 1963. It was done according to the Section 54(3) of The Union Territories Act, 1963.
