CHENNAI: If what one saw at Vinyassa Art Gallery in Alwarpet late last week was any indication, the city will soon have over a dozen names to reckon with in the textile designing industry. The first public display of their work by these final year Masters students in Textile Design at Stella Maris College brimmed with innovative designs. The gallery had various sections – bed linen, garments, home textiles, clutches and bags – none less artistically coloured or tastefully designed than the other. These girls had spent the final semester of their course interning in various fashion houses across the country, while simultaneously using the techniques they had studied to make at least 25 to 30 pieces of artwork. Some of the eye-grabbing themes were Padme, a range of sofa cushions inspired by the purity of the lotus; Achomania, a range of outfits inspired by the various curves and arches of modern architecture; and Mosaichic, a collection of clutches and bags with rich mosaic like designs on silk. Malini Malik, designer of the Padme collection, said, “This has been a great experience for us. We always knew what would sell and what would not in theoretical terms, but now we have seen it right before our eyes.” The price range of the items in the exhibition was between `100 and `2,000.
