BANGALORE: Bangalore University’s Centre for Gandhian Studies is planning to introduce three new papers in its Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) course in Gandhian Studies. The new syllabus will have papers on Gandhian Political and Religious Ideas, Gandhian Economic Philosophy and Gandhian Social Transformation. Dr Jeevan Kumar, Director, Centre for Gandhian Studies, told Express that the PGD course, whose intake is 21, is getting a good response every year. “The course is in its fourth year now. I am happy to say that we are running full strength,” said Dr Kumar. The proposed new syllabus for the 10-month course, according to Dr Kumar, reflects several aspects of Gandhian values. “Gandhian thoughts are represented in these papers. Students are obviously conscious about what they have chosen,” he added. With centralized forms in BU, students can opt for add-on Gandhian courses. “Fifty of them chose Gandhian studies last year. However, only 18 actually joined the course. Nevertheless, it is an indicator that the young are still interested in knowing Mahatma Gandhi,” he opined. “I think there is a growing need for the young to know more about Mahatma Gandhi. And yes, movies like Munnabhai Lage Raho have helped in this regard. We have many students dropping by to enquire about the course,” Dr Kumar remarked.
