New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA, Krishannanda Rai and six others have been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Gazipur district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday evening.
A special task force team has been sent from Lucknow to handle the law and order situation following Rai 's murder.
Four companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary have also been rushed to Ghazipur district.
The ambush took place when a convoy of Rai was passing through the area. The attackers reportedly arrived in a Tata Sumo and five motorcycles and fired at Rai's convoy.
The slain MLA was a known political opponent of independent MLA from Mau, Mukhtar Ansari.
The Uttar Pradesh Opposition has demanded imposition of President's rule in the state.
Other political parties also came down heavily on Mulayam Singh Yadav and blamed him for failure of law and order in UP.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam khan has said that Rai had a criminal background and he met his fate.
