A 24-year-old engineering graduate was arrested on Thursday, for allegedly peddling ganja for college students.
Police said that K Kalaimaran from Villupuram was nabbed based on information from a polytechnic college student, who was recently caught for selling the contraband.
Kaliamaran, who completed his engineering studies from a college here two years ago, resorted to peddling drugs as he was unable to land himself in a job.
“Even during college days, the accused was a drug addict and had maintained contacts with drug peddlers in Dindigul district. After he failed to get a job, he retur-ned to Coimbatore, rented a room in Peelamedu, and began targeting college students in the locality. We seized 1.5 kg of ganja,” police said.
He apparently sourced the contraband from drug peddlers in Dindigul and would regularly visit them.
He had also allegedly engaged a few college students as agents so as to peddle ganja to other students for
a margin.
Police were able to nab Kalaimaran only after the arrest of an 18-year-old college student and Vinod Kumar (20). The duo was spotted peddling ganja at Singanallur. “We came to know about Kalaimaran when we interrogated the duo about their source. They themselves were addicts and resorted to selling ganja to earn money to buy more of it,” police said.
Kalaimaran was remanded to judicial custody.
