Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor Venkatesh Murthy announced that the Bangalore corporators will stage an indefinite stir in all wards of the city against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
He was speaking after joining the Cauvery stir in Mandya on Thursday. He said BBMP will strongly oppose the decision to release 9000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu.
Raising slogans against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the corporators took out a rally from Sanjay Circle to Cauvery Vana.
Deputy Mayor Srinivas, corporators Nagaraju, Somashekar, MP N Cheluvarayaswamy and others joined the stir. Blood Export Kasturi Karnataka Janapara Vedike members staged a unique protest by donating blood and sending it to the Centre.
“When crores of people are facing water shortage and the state has been severely hit by drought, it is not fair to release water to TN,” the protestors said.
They burnt an effigy of Jayalalithaa and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. District Vishwakarma workers also took out a protest. Bike Rally About 450 BJP Youth wing workers took out a bike rally on the main thoroughfares of the city.
“Compared to the last 10 years, the state has recorded less rainfall this time and there is only 70 tmc ft water in reservoirs,” they said.
The protestors said that 49 taluks in the state were severely hit by drought and farmers were migrating to urban areas in search of jobs, orphaning livestock. They demanded that the President intervene immediately to stop the release of water.
BSR Congress District Committee activists also staged a protest in front of Gandhi statue. Blindfold Protest Chamarajanagar Zilla Kannada Association took out a blindfold protest.
Association president Murali said that the UPA government had taken the decision blindly, so they were protesting blindfolded. The protestors gathered near Nrupathunga Road and raised slogans.
