IT hub ranks 142 in list of world cities ranked on basis of standard of living.

New York: India's IT hub Bangalore has been rated the country's best city to live in on this year's global list but at 142 it falls far behind the leader, Austrian capital Vienna, in the chart comparing standard of living.

At 145, New Delhi is the second best Indian city to live in. Mumbai, which was at 142 last year in the list prepared by global consultants Mercer, has slipped to 148 in 2009.

The Quality of Living Report 2009, which has ranked 215 cities, says: "Terrorist attacks in Mumbai have led to the city's decline in quality of living for expatriates."

But India's financial capital is still ahead of Chennai, which ranks 152nd.

The Swiss cities of Zurich and Geneva have been ranked second and third in the global list. Vancouver in Canada and Auckland in New Zealand share the fourth position.

Top rankers in the Asian region are Hong Kong at eight and Tokyo at 12. At 26, Singapore is up six places since 2008.

The Olympics have pushed Beijing's ranking from 116 to 113, thanks to improvement in its infrastructure.

Dhaka ranks among the lowest in the Asian region at 197, while Baghdad ranks the lowest in the world.

The annual survey by the New York-based human resources company ranks the world's major cities for their quality of life, with New York as its base city.

The survey serves as a sort of scale for governments and global companies that send staff on international assignments.
