BANGALORE: Home Minister R Ashok announced a ban on bringing idols from other states. After inspecting various immersion points for Ganesha idols in Bangalore on Wednesday, Ashok said that every year, many devotees in the city order Ganesha idols from other states, which have percentage of lead paint. This, according to the environmentalists, is also one of the main pollutants of water bodies. “Ban on bringing Ganesha idols from other states will be imposed from next year,” he said.Also, Ashok said that the BBMP has been directed to ban idol manufacturing units that make and sell non eco-friendly Ganesha idols. “We are requesting owners of manufacturing units to make idols from mud and not to use plaster of paris.” Speaking about the plan on restricting number of days for celebrating festival in public places, the minister said that many organisers book artists three months before the festival. “This year, organisers claim that they have already booked and it would have caused inconvenience if number of days are restricted. So we have dropped  the plan for this year,” the home minister added.
