Mumbai: Days after Indian Mujahideen kingpin Muhammad Ahmad Zarar Siddibapa alias Yasin Bhatkal claimed that the Pune German Bakery blast accused Himayat Baig was not involved in the terror strike, more questions are being raised about the investigations into the case. Revelations by an independent journalist now claims that five witnesses had given statements against Himayat Baig during the trial.
While Baig has been given death sentence in the 2010 Pune German Bakery blast case, investigators of the terror attack which killed 17 people are increasingly finding themselves under the scanner.
Now independent journalist Ashish Khetan claims to have video recordings of five witnesses who gave statements against Baig during the trial.
In the recordings, the witnesses claim Anti-Terrorism Squad officers tutored them separately for several days on what to say in court. One such witness, Abdul Sayyad Raheem, claims RDX allegedly recovered from Himayat Baig was planted and the entire operation stage managed.
Earlier, Bhatkal had claimed that it was deceased terror accused Qateel Siddiqui and not Himayat who was involved in the blast. In fact, in their probes both Delhi and Bangalore police had recorded Qateel's confession, and had not mentioned Baig's involvement in the blast at all.
The government though says it won't seek a re-investigation and the ATS officials maintain that their evidence has stood the scrutiny of the court.
But these revelations do bolster Himayat Baig's case in the Bombay High Court where he has filed an appeal.
