New Delhi: The Centre on Sunday vowed a fitting reply to those responsible for attacks on migrant workers in Assam and asserted that it will ensure possible help and security to the victims of violence triggered by ULFA in the past two days.
After a tour of the violence-hit areas in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts, Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said the Government would not bow to the "pressure tactics" of the ULFA. He said "stronger measures" would be announced soon to deal with banned outfit.
The Union minister said additional forces have been dispatched to Assam to deal with the situation. He also said that curfew will continue in the disturbed areas for the time being.
Jaiswal assured the victims of the attacks that they would be provided adequate security and both the Central and state governments will take all possible steps to mitigate their sufferings. "Nobody can bring back those who have been killed, but I assure you that the Central and State governments will take all possible measures to mitigate their suffering," he told the families of those killed.
Jaiswal told them that in his meeting with the Chief Minister he took up their demand of Rs 10 lakh as compensation and government jobs to next of kin. "The entire country is for all its people. Assam is not just for Assamese, but for the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh too," he said.
Jaiswal was accompanied by Special Secretary G S Rajagopal and other senior Home Ministry officials during his visit to the strife-torn areas where ULFA militants triggered a series of blasts over the last two days killing as many as 48 people.
The Minister held a meeting with Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and assured all possible help in dealing with insurgency in the state. The two also discussed enhancing the deployment of Central forces in the northeastern state to fight the insurgency effectively.
Jaiswal also held a high-level meeting with the administration of the two districts. Later, he held separate meetings with Army officials, Director General of Asom Police and state ministers and discussed measures to contain the recent surge in insurgent activities.
He added that the Centre was always open for talks if the outfit abjured violence and sat for dialogue.
The Union minister also asserted that the National Games in Guwahati in February would be held as per schedule.
A three-member delegation from Bihar comprising three state ministers also visited the region and met the victims on Sunday. They discussed the issue of security for Biharis with the Centre and the Assam Government.
