CHENNAI: When palm leafs were originally written, electricity was still to be invented. On Thursday, when a special exhibition on conservation of antiquities was inaugurated, power disappeared perhaps to bring a "native feel" to the whole range of antiquities!
The valedictory function of 37th refresher course on care of museum objects and inauguration of special exhibition on conservation of antiquities was scheduled to open at 4 pm at the Centenary exhibition hall of the museum.V K Jeyakodi, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, along with SS Jawahar, Commissioner of Museums, promptly arrived at the premises five minutes ahead of schedule only to find the grand old hall pitch dark without power.

The expo was inaugurated by Jeyakodi along with Jawahar by 5 pm, even as the staff were holding candles to provide illumination to the objects on display. The officials went around the exhibits and were explained about their significance by patient employees and participants despite the darkness. The only saving grace was the resumption of power supply when Jawahar was about to address the audience.
