Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday said one should not ignore the fact that some American lobby was active against the External Affairs minister.
Bhattacharjee said that because Natwar Singh was against the sanctions on and the invasion of Iraq, Americans might have wanted him out.
"I have not gone through the Volcker Committee report but I know it was on Iraq and that we cannot ignore the fact that some American lobby was active against our External Affairs minister," Mr Bhattacharjee said.
However he was quick to add that he was am not justifying Natwar Singh's involvement, if any.
Natwar Singh was on Monday stripped off the portfolio of External Affairs minister in the wake of his name figuring in the Volcker Committee report.
The removal of Mr Singh was officially announced in New Delhi shortly after the minister had an hour-long meeting with the Prime Minister.
