Ahmedabad: Twenty-six medical students of the B J Medical college on Wednesday began a 48-hour hunger strike on Wednesday morning.

They are protesting the Centre's decision to implement 27 per cent quota for OBCs in central educational institution from June 2007.

“We had planned to start indefinite hunger strike. However, our colleagues in Delhi asked us to join them in full strength on May 28. So we had to change our plan. We will decide about going on indefinite hunger strike after we return from Delhi," a student representative of B J Medical college said.

Meanwhile, the 72-hour strike of junior doctors in five hospitals of the city entered the second day on Wednesday.

In absence of these doctors, the emergency and OP services are being handled by the faculty, hospital sources said. Students of V S hospital in Ahmedabad have started parallel OPDs for the patients.

The agitation of the medical students was confined to taking out rallies and protest marches in the city.

However, students say that the agitation has entered decisive phase with the announcement of the central government to implement reservation by June 2007.
