Cops considering invoking NSA against criminals

Amid criticism from various quarters arising out of the recent bomb blasts here, Chief Minister N Rangasamy held a meeting of top police officials from the Union Territory on Friday to review the law and order situation.

Inspector General of Police Ranvir Singh Krishnia and Deputy Inspector General I D Shukla met Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Friday. The top police officials are believed to have submitted a number of proposals in curbing the rising rowdy menace in the UT.

Rangasamy also chaired a meeting of superintendents of police, inspectors and sub-inspectors separately. The Chief Minister is believed to have expressed his unhappiness over the country bomb blasts that took place recently and he did not mince his words in expressing it. Rangasamy asked the top officials to take stern action against the criminals involved in the attacks, assuring the police that his government would back them in executing their duty.

Superintendent of Police (North), S Ramaraj, on Friday evening, revealed names of the two persons arrested in connection with Thursday’s blast in which an eight-year-old was injured.  Ramaraj also said that the CM has given strict instructions to the police officials present at the meeting to eradicate the rowdy menace from UT.

The arrest of the anti-social elements under the Goonda’s Act from the list already submitted to the district collector was one among the proposals put forth by the police officers. The police were also exploring the possibilities of using the National Security Act (NSA) against hardcore criminals.

Another proposal was the shifting of some of the hardcore criminals from Puducherry to Tihar Jail after getting nod from the Centre.

The top police officials were believed to have suggested monitoring of the details of sale of crackers, especially the powerful ones. The manufacturers and owners of these firms, also retailers would be asked to submit daily report about their business to nearest PS.

“UT police are competent, we are capable of handling any situation,” one of the police officials said, when contacted after the meeting with the CM on Friday.
