Peshawar: Afghanistan at the cricket world cup? Well, don't be fooled into dismissing that as a laughable proposition.
The Afghans are just one step away from realising that near impossible dream.
All hell may be breaking lose in Pakistan, the cricketers from Afghanistan aren't worried.
The players are in Peshawar, quietly honing their skills ahead of their 2011 World Cup qualifying matches in South Africa next month.
Head coach of Afghan National cricket team Kabir Khan said, "Our preparation is very good. Actually, the facilities are brilliant. The security is brilliant. Players are feeling just like as they are at their home."
The players have just one aim, to make it to the holy grail – the world cup, four of the 12 countries who will be seen in action in South Africa will play the world cup, and the Afghans believe they can be part of this elite group.
All Rounder Karim Dad Noori said, "We have already good bowlers and a good fielding side. So we hope we will go to World Cup with the help of God."
Young cricketers from the war-torn nation have taken rapid strides toward gaining ODI status.
Their latest triumph came in Buenos Aires this January when they won the ICC's third division tournament.
Now they are just a step away from competing with the men they look up to.
