Mumbai: Film actor Shiney Ahuja, who is accused of raping his domestic help, was on Thursday granted bail three months after his arrest.
The Bombay High Court granted bail to Shiney on a surety of Rs 50,000, his lawyer Shirish Gupte said. "He will be required to live in New Delhi during the trial and come to Mumbai every time there is a hearing," said Gupte.
The actor will be required to live in New Delhi and refrain from tampering with evidence in any manner, he said.
On at least two occasions, lower courts in Mumbai had rejected Shiney’s bail application.
On Thursday, the matter came up before Justice A P Deshpande who granted him bail with conditions. Shiney has been accused of raping his domestic help at his Andheri home on June 14 and has been in custody since then.
Shiney’s wife Anupam Ahuja was "overwhelmed" and "extremely relieved" after her husband was granted bail.
"This decision by the court has been overwhelming. I am so happy that our daughter has got her father back, Shiney's parents have got their son back and I have got my husband back," Anupam told reporters after the court’s ruling.
"I am thankful to all those who prayed for Shiney's well being and all those who gave good arguments in the court. The case was presented very well," said Anupam, who has been protesting Shiney's innocence since the day he was taken into custody.
Following an assurance by Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Shiney's case was transferred from a sessions court to a fast-track court in Sewri where the trial is on.
