THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Although Edward Albee writes about the American situation, his themes are also relevant to the whole world, said Daphne Gomez, principal of L’ecole Chempaka, whose book ‘Modes Of Illusion in the Plays Of Edward Albee’ was released on Wednesday. The book focuses on Albee’s treatment of the divide between the rich and the poor.“One half of the human population lives in an illusionary world, blind to the poverty that plagues the rest of the world. Albee brings out this world of illusion through his sharp commentary,” said Gomez, elaborating on the motivation behind converting her doctoral thesis into a full-length reference book.Jancy George, Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Kerala, Kasargod, who was also Gomez’s research guide, released the book at Mascot Hotel. She pointed out the uniqueness and risk in the choice of subject by Daphne Gomez for her thesis and the relevance of Edward Albee’s message in today’s sociopolitical context, as reflected in his plays. The 252-page book has been brought out by the Kolkata-based publishing house Writers’ Workshop. Gomez paid her obeisance to its founder poet Purushotham Lal, who passed away in 2010, just after the final draft of the book was ready.“The book is a special hand-crafted one, bound with handloom and printed using a hand press, a signature style of Purushotham Lal. You can see his calligraphy in the book,” she said. The book and the author were introduced to the audience by Rev. Vinod Victor, former student of Gomez and currently the manager of the Charitable Society of the CSI South Kerala Diocese and presbyter-in-charge of the CSI Church, Lenin Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram.
