NEYYATINKARA: UDF candidate R Selvaraj got a surprise visitor at the election committee office on Saturday morning, Rukia, 65, who has come all the way from Shoranur. Though Rukia doesn’t have a vote in the bypoll, she came with a song for the UDF candidate for his election campaign.Rukia, who believes that ‘lady luck’ accompanies her song, claims that she had sung for several leaders in the state for their election campaigns and the last one was for Anoop Jacob in the Piravom bypoll. “I came from Shoranur with the hope that I will get a chance to sing for Congress candidate R Selvaraj,” said Rukia.“I have been singing for various functions for the past 15 years. All the candidates for whom I sang had won the elections with a thumping majority. I sang for E T Mohammed Basheer in Ponnani and A P Abdullakutty in Kannur. This time in this election, I want to sing for Selvaraj and I am sure he will win the election if I sing for him,” claims Rukia, who writes and composes her songs.Whether ‘lady luck’ accompanies her song or not, Rukia was lucky enough that Selvaraj, who reached the election committee office around 11.30 a.m. after the routine house campaign, met her and heard her song. The lyrics of her song started from the brutal killing of T P Chandrasekharan and ended with a request for the people to cast their votes for Selvaraj. The one-time CPM fellow-traveller, who cut his ties with the party to contest on the Congress ticket, heard the song with a smile and assured her that he would give her a chance to sing for his campaign. Keeping his promise, a vehicle was arranged for her and she sang on Saturday evening itself at a meeting at Kulathur panchayat.“I don’t know whether her claims are true but since she has travelled all the way from Shoranur to support me in the election campaign, why not give her a chance?” asked Selvaraj.
