CHENNAI: It was a day when two dogs showcased their loyalty to their master by accepting to get married to each other even though many were pretty sure the animals had no idea of what was happening. In an attempt to teach a lesson to those who intended to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the city, activists of the Hindu Munnani on Tuesday conducted a “marriage function” for two dogs, the idea behind which was an attempt to liken those who “get into relationships and change partners often” to the animals. Loganathan, a Hindu Munnani activist who offered his dogs, the three-year-old Appu and Chikku, for the ceremony, said that the Indian culture had never been against love. “We are not against love. Even our ancestors loved using doves as messengers. But we are against girls changing partners often,” he said. The activists said that the idea of more than one partner before getting married was the mentality of animals and man, being a “civilised creature”, could not stoop to that level. However, people who gathered to watch the ceremony on the Pulianthope High Road were not amused. “It is only because these people conduct such ridiculous events that Valentine’s Day is getting famous. Otherwise, none of us would bother,” said Vijayalakshmi, who was on her way to her office. The dogs though, had only barks for remarks.
