New Delhi: Australia‘s largest city, Sydney, plunged itself into darkness for an hour on Saturday night as the residents cut the lights for energy conservation.

Famous buildings like the Sydney Opera House, hundreds of enterprises and more than 50,000 households participated in the campaign meant to draw the citizens' attention to global warming.

Not everything came to a halt though: essential lights like street lights were kept on for safety reasons.

The power shutdown was carried out to raise awareness about carbon emissions in the city. The campaign aims to cut Sydney's greenhouse gas emissions by five per cent over the next year.

The event came a week before the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN's network of 2,000 scientists, releases its report on climate change.
