CHENNAI: Within the last one and half months, the city police have arrested 83 criminals in 86 cases. They include chain snatchers and those involved in robbery and vehicle thefts. Those arrested include students as well, and police have recovered property worth Rs 1 crore that include 600 sovereigns of gold jewellery, 2.5 kg of sliver and 10 vehicles.
Addressing reporters here on Thursday, City Police Commissioner J K Tripathy said the involvement of students and office goers in incidents like chain snatching was a disturbing trend."As many as 49 accused were involved in 72 chainsnatching cases. They indulged in such crime to lead a lavish life," said Tripathy.

When asked about the increasing chain snatching cases in the city, Tripathy said, "There is no spurt in chain snatching compared to previous months, but the trend is disturbing. We have formed special teams to put an end to the menace."
