Mild tension prevailed in Singanallur here on Tuesday night after a Vinayagar idol placed at AG Pudur was allegedly damaged by cadres of a Dravidian outfit.
Police said eight members of the Dravida Viduthalai Kazhagam assembled near the Vinayagar idol around 11.30 pm and entered into an argument with the organisers of the festival ridiculing their belief.
“A few of them suddenly pelted stones on the idol. As only a couple of the organisers were present, they were not able to stop the attack,” said a police officer.
As word spread about the incident spread, members of a few Hindu organisations arrived at the spot.
Later they lodged a complaint with the Singanallur police.
“We visited the spot on Tuesday night and found that the attackers were from the same locality. There was no ulterior motive. A wordy argument had taken a violent turn,” said a police officer.
The Singanallur police have arrested eight persons identified as Veeramani (24), Narayana Murthy (23), Vaikunda Raman (24), Ramamurthy (22), Karthikeyan (25), Parthiban (20), Ramesh Kumar (21) and Sarkuman (23) in connection with the incident. All the eight have been booked under five different sections and remanded to custody.
