CHENNAI: An official release here said the Union Ministry of Coal allocated a coal reserve (Gare Pelma-II) of about 768 million tons in Chhattisgarh to Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra to develop the mine, generate, share power or coal.The share of coal produced from the mine to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) will be 592 million tons. The Maharashtra State Mining Corporation (MSMC) will be get 176 million tons. To develop the coalfield, a joint venture company, Maha-Tamil Collieries Limited (MTCL), was formed by TANGEDCO and MSMC.In view of the huge expense involved in transportation of coal to TN, a tender was floated for mining the coal and setting up an on-site thermal plant. LANCO Infratech Limited was selected as the successful bidder by MTCL. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday gave away the letter of award to LANCO vice chairman G Baskar Rao.Under the arrangement, TANGEDCO would get 630 MW of power, at `1.99 per unit and MSMC would get 23 per cent of the coal produced. Chhattisgarh would get 740 MW. LANCO Infratech would get a share of 630 MW as the developer of coal and generator of power.Capacity AdditionOn the occasion, Jayalalithaa said plans are on the anvil to increase the installed power capacity to a massive extent of 23,140 MW from the present level of 10,237 MW during the next five years. Of this, 15,140 MW will be through thermal, 5,000 MW from wind, and 3,000 MW out of solar. Inviting investors to set up power plants in Tamil Nadu, she assured them of the State’s full support.
