VELLORE: As many as 40 bootleggers were arrested during raids conducted at various places in Vellore on Saturday.Vellore SP Kayalvizhi had ordered a district-wide search for bootleggers on Saturday. Following this, a total of 47 cases were booked and 40 bootleggers involved in selling and smuggling liquor were held.A total of 1,600 litres of illicit liquor and 120 litres of toddy were seized from them and later destroyed.In another incident, a person from another State, found selling fake liquor was arrested and 75 bottles of liquor seized from him, near Arcot on Saturday.Rathnagiri police were involved in a patrol on Saturday night in Nandhiyalayam area near Arcot, when they found a person involved in selling fake liquor near the Palar river bed.He was identified as Vijayakumar (41) of Keezhvisharam. A case was registered and he was produced before Arcot court.Man Mowed Down by LorryA 56-year-old man was killed on the spot when he was hit by a lorry near Ambur on Saturday night.Chinnadurai (56) of Rajapalayam, a businessman, had participated in ‘sandhai’ on Saturday in Madhanur and was returning home when he was hit by a lorry. He died on the spot. Ambur taluk police have registered a case and launched a search to nab the driver of the lorry.Four Women Arrested For Smuggling RiceFour women from Andhra Pradesh who were smuggling rice were caught red-handed near Pernambut on Saturday.The women, who were loading rice bags on to a bus leaving for AP, were arrested when Gudiyatham ASP Sibi Chakravorthy conducted a vehicle check at the Pernambut, on Saturday. The arrested were identified as Mangamma (35), Mangamma (55), Basheera (30) and Korima (38) of Nayakaneri village in AP.
