New York: A 12-year-old passenger dialed 911 to report her drunk-driving mother as their car swerved down a New York state highway, her blood alcohol level more than double the legal limit, police said.

Police credited the call on Sunday night with potentially saving their lives.

Jamie Hicks, 49, of Islip, New York, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after her daughter called police to report her mother's dangerous driving, New York State Police said.

Hicks had been driving on Interstate 84 near Brewster, about 50 miles north of New York City.

The driver's blood alcohol level was determined to be .18 per cent, more than double the legal limit of .08 per cent, according to police. Also in the car was Hick's 10-year-old son.

"This young girl made a very brave decision," state Police Capt. Robert Nuzzo told the New York Daily News.

"She (the driver) was acting odd, speaking incoherently and swerving in and out of traffic," Nuzzo said, citing Hicks' daughter's account.
