The 125th anniversary of the Kerala State Legislative Assembly will begin on August 23. The one-year long anniversary celebrations will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Governor K Shakaranarayanan at a function which will be presided over by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
It was on August 23, 1888, that the first meeting of the Travancore Legislative Council was held. There were just five members at the meeting which was presided over by Diwan Shankara Subbaiyer. The meeting was held sharp at 12 noon.
A whole lot of programmes including lectures, seminars, exhibitions and cultural programmes will be held as part of the year long anniversary celebrations.
The President, Loksabha Speaker, Union Ministers, experts from various fields and cultural leaders from across the country are expected to take part in the celebrations.
The visiting VIPs and celebrities will be asked to plant saplings. As many as 125 saplings will be planted, each one representing one year of the total 125 years of the Assembly.
Apart from the programmes in the Capital city, programmes will also be held in Kochi as well as Kozhikode. Sports events for the employees will be held where members of the Assembly as well as mediapersons will be invited to take part.
A souvenir with two volumes that speaks of the history of the Assembly will be published.
The Assembly Museum will become fully functional soon as the preparations are in a near-completion state. A special section in the Museum will be set apart for Mahathma Gandhi. A project to establish sculptures in the garden of the Assembly is being finalised in collaboration with the Lalitha Kala Akademi.
Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan will deliver the key-note address at the inaugural function on August 23. Speaker G Karthikeyan, P K Kunhalikutty, K M Mani, K B Ganesh Kumar, Shibu Baby John, Anoop Jacob, C.Divakaran, Mathew T Thomas, M V Shreyams Kumar, A A Azees and Thomas Chandy among others will speak on the occasion.
