At least nine people, including a four-day old baby, died after fire broke out at an apartment complex garage in Hyderabad’s Nampally area on Monday. The apartment complex where the fire broke out is located in Nampally’s Bazarghat, DCP Venkateshwar Rao Central Zone said.
The fire started at the ground floor of the building and spread to four floors within minutes. According to the witnesses, the sparks during a car repair work at the garage on the ground floor triggered the fire, which intensified due to drums of diesel and chemicals kept there.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were called in for rescue operation. Police said that as many as 21 people fell unconscious in the incident and were shifted to Osmania Hospital for treatment.
DCP, Madhapur Zone (Law & Order )Cyberabad, Venkateshwarlu, said some families have been staying on rent in the third and fourth floors of the building, adding that some people died of suffocation due to the smoke.
A child and a woman were seen getting pulled out from the building in a daring rescue op amid the fire.

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, in a press communique, expressed profound sorrow over the fire accident and conveyed her condolences to the families of the deceased.
“Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan directed the Chief Secretary to the Government to take immediate measures to provide comprehensive medical assistance to those who sustained injuries in the incident and also issued directives to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and furnish a comprehensive report on the circumstances leading to the fire, the response mechanisms in place, and the corrective measures that can be implemented within the next two days,” the statement said.
President of India Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences for the tragic incident that led to loss of so many lives.

Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankar also took to X to express grief for the fire accident. He also prayed for the quick recovery of those injured.

Telangana BJP chief and Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, meanwhile, said that the accident happened due to “firecrackers”. Such accidents are happening again and again due to illegal warehouses in commercial and residential areas, he said, adding that the “government says at the time of the accident that no illegal warehouse will be allowed to exist in Hyderabad but after the accident the situation remains the same.”
In another fire incident from Hyderabad, massive blaze broke out at five godowns, containing slippers, at a building at Mir Chowk police station limits of Old City on Sunday.
The fire spread on the second and third floors of the building. The fire was doused entirely on the second floor while operations were ongoing on the third as on Sunday evening. Locals said there were no reports of any casualties in the incident as no one was at the factory on account of Diwali.
