Find a display case of the figurine set you want to collect at your local store. These can be found at outlets like Wal-Mart, Target, and Walgreens. Take note of how many mystery boxes are in the display case you find. Fewer mystery boxes in a display mean a lower chance of finding the figurine(s) you want, while more makes collecting them easier.
Identify the batch number for the mystery boxes in the display case. Check the bottom of at least one mystery box in the case to see what it's batch number is. It will look something like "34490BA17". Make sure all of the mystery boxes in the display case share the same first five digits. This is essential if you want to figure out what's inside all of them. It is fine if the letter code is different between them.
Buy one of the mystery boxes. You will need to buy at least one to figure out what's inside the rest. Take note of what the box's letter code is (i.e, BA, BB, BC, etc.). This will be important for later.Tip: Don't leave the store! If you can, use your phone to complete these next steps immediately. You will want to return to the same display case before other people buy the rest of the mystery boxes.
Open the box to see which figurine is inside. Once again, take note of the box's letter code, and which figurine was inside it. Examine the series checklist enclosed in the box to keep track of what you need from that figurine set.
Go online and find a complete list of letter codes and their corresponding figurines for the series you're collecting. Search around for a complete list using Google or another search engine. You can also check places like the Minecraft Minifigure subreddit for reliable lists. Take note of the batch number of the list you find. It will most likely be different than yours, but that is fine.
Compare the figurine you got and it's letter code to the list you found to determine your batch's codes. Look at the list you found. No matter what the batch number is, all the figurines from the same batch will be in the same order. Then, look at the figurine you got, and compare it to its position on the list. If you got a Creeper with the letter code BA, but on the list you found it's BD, that means your batch has its letters shifted up by three compared to the list you found. Apply this to all the other figurines in the set to determine their letter code.
Use the online list to determine which figurines are in which mystery boxes from your chosen display case. Keep track of the batch numbers and letter codes of the mystery boxes you select, as the coding system will not work otherwise.
