How to Arrange Pillows on a Bed
Arranging the pillows on your bed is an eye-appealing, inexpensive, and easy way to dress up your bedroom. Pillow arrangements can be sleek and minimalist, or bold and dramatic. Experiment with simple arrangements, try using Euro pillows (also called European squares), or adapt pillow arrangements to suit a king-sized bed. With a bit of planning and creativity, your pillow arrangement can have dimension and style.
Steps

Creating a Minimalist Arrangement

Stack 4 pillows horizontally if you have a short headboard. For this look, you will need 4 standard pillows: 2 with basic pillow cases and 2 with pillow shams. Make sure they are all the same size so the look is balanced. Lay your 2 standard pillows with basic pillow cases side-by-side across the top of your bed. Place your pillows with shams directly on top of these. Select pillow shams that match your bedspread. This is a great option if you don’t want to spend too much time making your bed each morning.

Stack 4 pillows vertically if you have a tall headboard. For this look, you will also need 4 standard pillows: 2 with basic pillow cases and 2 with pillow shams. However, for this look, you will stack your 2 pillows with basic pillow cases standing up against your headboard. Then, place your pillows with shams directly in front of these. You can choose a dark color for the pillow cases in the back and a bright color for the pillow cases in the front, if desired.

Add an accent pillow for flair. With either of these minimalist looks, you can also include a single accent pillow. Place your accent pillow in front of the other pillows, centered between them. Make sure the accent pillow isn’t too small, or it will look dwarfed by the others. A 12 by 20 inches (30 by 51 cm) pillow is an excellent choice. Select a bold color for your accent pillow that compliments your bedspread and other pillows. If your accent pillow is a body pillow, you could lay it in front of the 4 stacked pillows for a uniform, but visually interesting, look.

Using Large "Euro" Pillows

Fill out your Euro shams. Euro pillows, also called European squares, are larger square pillows that can add height and dimension to your pillow arrangement. For the best results, select Euro pillow shams that complement your bedspread. Then fill these shams with pillows that are up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) larger, to create a full, rounded look. Euro pillows are a good choice if you do not have a headboard. This pillows also look good against most headboards, so long as the headboard is taller than the pillows. You can use neutral pillow cases or pick a bright color or bold pattern.

Use 2 Euro pillows and an accent pillow for a sleek and stylish look. Choose 3 square pillows. Stand 2 large Euro pillows up against your headboard (or wall) side-by-side. Then place 1 square accent pillow right in the center. A 20 by 20 inches (51 by 51 cm) accent pillow is a good choice for this arrangement. You could also add a cylindrical pillow, called a bolster pillow, in front of the Euro shams. Select Euro shams and an accent pillow/standard pillow sham in complementary colors.

Try a 5 pillow arrangement for more depth and dimension. Use 2 Euro pillows, 2 standard pillows, and 1 accent pillow. Stand your two Euro pillows up against your headboard (or wall). Place two standard pillows (with either shams or basic pillow cases) in front of these. Finish with a 20 by 20 inches (51 by 51 cm) square accent pillow centered in front.

Add more pillows if you have a very large bed. You can use 6 or more pillows if you wish. To use 6 pillows, use 2 accent pillows and place each one in front of one of the standard pillows. Choose either square or rectangular (12 by 20 inches (30 by 51 cm)) accent pillows. Or, you can use 2 Euro shams, 2 standard pillows, 2 accent pillows, and then a smaller circle or bolster pillow in front of it all. If you looked at the bed from above, the pillows would create a triangle with the top point facing the foot of the bed.

Create depth by using levels. If you'd really like to create a dynamic pillow look, try mixing Euro pillows with standard pillows to create levels. For this look, you will need 3 Euro pillows and 3 standard pillows in shams. Stand 2 Euro pillows up against your headboard or wall. Follow with 2 standard pillows. Then place your third Euro pillow in the center, and follow with the last standard pillow. You may choose to use basic pillow cases on the rear standard pillows. Be sure the standard pillow in the front has a nice sham. Match the colors/patterns of the rear 2 Euro pillows to the front standard pillow. Match the shams on 2 standard pillows and single Euro pillow.

Arranging Pillows on a King-Sized Bed

Add a third column. Most pillow arrangements are 2 columns wide, and are designed to work best for a full or queen size bed. Any arrangement can be adapted for a king (or California king) size bed, by adding a third column of pillows. For minimalist arrangements, use 6 standard pillows (instead of 4). Stack them (horizontally or vertically) in sets of 2. If you would like to use accent pillows, you have 2 choices. You can center one in front of the center stack of pillows, or use 2 pillows, placing one at each space between the standard pillow stacks. For Euro arrangements, use 3 Euro pillows in place of 2. Follow with 3 standard pillows. You can always choose to use 2 accent pillows, or stick with 1.

Use king-sized pillows. Another option is to use 2 king-sized pillows instead of using 3 standard pillows. Two king-sized pillows should fill the width of your bed. For minimalist arrangements, use 4 king-sized pillows, stacking them (horizontally or vertically) in stacks of 2. For Euro arrangements, start with 3 Euro pillows and follow with 2 king-sized pillows.

Experiment with more rows. Working with a king-sized bed allows you to use more pillows without the arrangement becoming overly busy. Many common arrangements are 2-3 rows thick. When working with a king-sized bed, you can create arrangements with 3-4 rows. Some ideas include: 3 Euro pillows, 3 standard pillows, and 3 square accent pillows 3 Euro pillows, 2 king-sized pillows, and 3 rectangular accent pillows 3 Euro pillows, 2 king-sized pillows, 2 square accent pillows, and 1 rectangular accent pillow Groups of accent pillows often come in various shapes, sizes, and colors that complement one another. These work well on king-sized beds since they can be displayed properly.
