How does the Hinge algorithm work?
Hinge's algorithm is based on the Nobel prize-winning Gale-Shapley algorithm. Not only does the algorithm show you people it thinks you will like, you'll also see people who are most likely to like you back. The algorithm determines compatibility based on your profile info, likes and dislikes, who you like or skip, dealbreakers, and who you exchange phone numbers with. As you use Hinge, the algorithm learns who you like, who you leave comments for, and who you're having conversations with.
How do prompts work with the algorithm?
Prompts change monthly depending on their popularity and success. Your answers to prompts not only make it easy for others to start conversations with you, but also give the algorithm a better understanding of who you are. Answer prompts to show your true personality and your matches will improve.
How does Hinge figure out Most Compatible?
Most Compatible is calculated over time based on your profile, likes/dislikes, prompts, and dealbreaker answers. You can find your "Most Compatible" partners in the "Standouts" section. If you don't provide enough information to Hinge, you could get incorrect results and match with someone that isn't your type. The more you use Hinge, the better. The algorithm can then gather more information from your actions (the profiles you like and skip) and give you better matches! The dealbreaker option allows you to rule out profiles that might be a good match for you, but have habits that you don't like. For example, if your dealbreaker is smoking, you won't get any matches that have their "Smoking" set to anything other than "None."
Make the Algorithm Work for You
Interact with Hinge regularly. Don't set up your profile, then forget about it for the next 6 months. The algorithm will learn who you like and who you skip, leading to better matches overall. If you don't use the app much, you'll get fewer and lower-quality matches.
Fill out your profile completely. Give the algorithm as much information about you as possible to ensure the best results. Fill out your likes and dislikes, add photos and videos, and be honest about your dealbreakers.
Use prompts. Hinge doesn't randomly throw prompts at you; the dating service only uses prompts that are more likely to result in dates or conversations. Hinge uses your answers as data for the algorithm, so it benefits you to answer prompts creatively and honestly. Keeping up with the prompts every month improves the algorithm for your profile.
Revisit your dealbreakers. Those are the rules that you added to eliminate specific profiles. If there's something about a potential match that would call for an instant "No" from you, don't be afraid to add it to your dealbreakers. The algorithm immediately discards profiles that have your dealbreaker, even if they are a great match for you—revisiting what you've listed might be a good way to get more matches.
Tell the app when you've gone on a date. Even if you've gone on one date and are not looking for a second date, let Hinge know using "We Met." This teaches the algorithm how successful the match was and uses that information to improve your future matches.
Redo your profile. Maybe you were burnt out when you originally created your profile so it's bare-bones or not authentic. You can change your profile pictures, prompts, and anything else on your profile to influence the Hinge algorithm.
