Though NorthEast United FC’s (NEUFC) performance in the past two seasons of the Indian Super League (ISL) has been far from impressive, their newly-appointed coach Sergio Farias is confident of the team’s good show in the third season.
NEUFC have roped in Brazilian Farias, a former AFC Champions League winner, as coach for ISL 2016.
"The expectation is to play good football and challenge for honours. The club management has been very supportive and I know about the fantastic fans that NEUFC possesses. We need to now lay the foundation for a good season," Farias told News18.com in an interview.
The 49-year-old Farias has coached the Brazil Under-20 team in 1998-99 and 2001. He has also managed Brazil's Under-17 team that won the South American Championship in 2001.
“I will try and pass on all my knowledge and experience to my players. Hopefully they will benefit. I strongly believe that our Indian boys will make the difference this year,” the Brazilian said.
For the third ISL season, NorthEast United have already signed players like Subrata Paul, Nirmal Chettri, Shouvik Ghosh, Sumit Passi and Rowllin Borges.
But that's not all as the team from the northeastern part of India is looking to add more firepower to their repertoire.
"We are looking to add players who will fit our philosophy and will help the club execute its blueprint in the best possible way,” Farias said.
Farias, who has also coached former World Player of the Year Ronaldinho during his Under-20 coaching stint, mentored South Korean side Pohang Steelers to win the AFC Champions League in 2009.
“It's been a long and eventful journey. There have been many lessons learnt, many places seen and many tasks dealt with. It has made me a better coach and hopefully I can channel some of that into NorthEast United FC for the ISL,” Farias said on his coaching journey so far.
With that wealth of experience, Farias is ready for his first ISL assignment.
“Every project has its own challenges. This will be no different.
"The ISL is an excellent step for Indian football to take. With improved infrastructure, better players and better coaches, the Indian players and the country stand to benefit in the long run,” Farias said.
Describing his footballing policy, the 49-year-old gave a quick sneak-peek into what the NEUFC fans can expect from their team this year.
“I love to play fast, offensive football with balance in all departments. I feel this shall be a unique year for the club and hopefully we can make dreams come true.”
