New Delhi: The French international defender picked up a knee problem during the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Villarreal on Tuesday.

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that defender William Gallas has been ruled out of action for the rest of this season due to injury.

The 31-year-old was substituted during the first-half of the Gunners' Champions League quarter-final first leg tie away to Villarreal, and it has since come to light that he has suffered medial knee ligament damage.

Meanwhile, the north London outfit also look likely to be without first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Almunia for the foreseeable future.

The Spaniard picked up an ankle injury during the same match after clashing with El Submarino Amarillo striker Giuseppe Rossi, the same player who inadvertently caused Gallas' injury.

In addition, left-back Gael Clichy will not play for Arsenal against Wigan Athletic in the Premier League fixture at the DW Stadium on Saturday as he sustained a back problem at the Estadio El Madrigal.
