Lionel Messi’s Ibiza mansion has reportedly been vandalised by climate activists. The Inter Miami star purchased the property in 2022 for a reported fee of €11 million. According to The Huffington Post, the mansion has been vandalised by a group named Futuro Vegetal.
As per the same report, the activists broke into Messi’s villa at the start of the week and painted it red and black. They later shared photographs of their act of vandalism in a post on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “We tinted Messi’s illegal mansion in Ibiza. The Mansion is an illegal construction that the footballer acquired for the exorbitant sum of 11 million euros.”

In a reply to the original post, Futuro Vegetal added more pictures where two individuals from the group could be seen standing in front of Lionel Messi’s house and presumably in his backyard. In both these pictures, those individuals were holding up a banner that read, “Help the planet, eat the rich, abolish the police.”

The activists performed this vandalism to bring people’s attention to the ongoing climate crisis in the Balearic Islands. Talking about the situation, Futuro Vegetala wrote on X, “While this is happening, in the Balearic Islands alone between 2 and 4 people have died as a direct consequence of the heat wave. The richest 1% of the population is responsible for the same amount of carbon emissions as the poorest two-thirds.”
Esto solo es posible por el sostenimiento por parte de los poderes públicos de un sistema económico-social que atenta contra la vida ❌ pic.twitter.com/c87GzgkEzX— FuturoVegetal (@FuturoVegetal) August 6, 2024
In another response, they wrote, “This is only possible because public authorities support an economic-social system that threatens life.” They next added, “While the far right blames migrants for the crisis and displays extreme violence against them, those of us who fight for a better world are clear that the problem is social inequality. Let’s tackle the problems at the root. We need a radical change of system to face the Climate Crisis.”
Mientras que la extrema derecha culpa de la crisis a las migrantes y demuestra una extrema violencia contra ellas, quienes luchamos por un mundo mejor tenemos claro que el problema es la desigualdad social. Lionel Messi has frequently visited his San Josep property in the last two years, along with his wife and three children. The Argentine still has not given an official statement about the break-in and act of vandalism of his property directly. He is currently enjoying some time away from football, after guiding Argentina to their second-consecutive Copa America title and third successive international major.
Lionel Messi is also recovering from an ankle injury that he picked during the Copa America final against Colombia. A clear date for his return to Major League Soccer (MLS) has not been decided yet.
