How Intense Is The Competition For One Medical Seat In India? Check Out These Numbers
Each year, thousands of students vie for a limited number of medical college seats, making the journey to becoming a doctor a challenging one

Every year, lakhs of students appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG). Candidates get admission in medical courses only on the basis of their score in NEET exam in a tough competition.

In the year 2024, 24,06,079 candidates applied for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG). Out of them, 23,33,297 students appeared for the exam. Only 13,16,268 candidates passed the NEET UG exam.

The total number of MBBS seats available in India stands at 112,000. This figure represents a substantial increase from the previous total of 51,384 seats. The growth in seat numbers is attributed to the rise in medical colleges across the country, from 387 in 2017 to 731 in 2024.

The competition for each MBBS seat remains intense. With 13 lakh candidates competing for 1.12 lakh seats, there are approximately 8 to 9 contenders for every MBBS seat. This high ratio illustrates the challenges students face in achieving their dream of becoming a doctor.

The journey to medical school is highly competitive, with many aspiring doctors eyeing for a limited number of seats. Despite an increase in the number of MBBS seats, the competition still remains very tough.
