'Wicket Offered Assistance and Swing', Says History-maker Lockie Ferguson After Milestone Spell Against PNG

New Zealand finished up their Group C assignments in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the West Indies with a win over Papua New Guinea on Monday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Kiwis bundled PNG for 78 runs thanks to a historic spell from pacer Lockie Ferguson as he bowled four maidens in his dour over, while also picking up a three-wicket haul.

He spoke about the tricky nature of the wicket and added that the side were hopeful of a deeper run in the tournament coming into the campaign.

“A tough wicket to bat on, nice to bowl on that,” he began.

“Sad to be leaving, such high hopes coming in,” he continued.

He revealed that the surface offered swing and some purchase for the seamers, who could bowl seam-up all day at T and T.

“It is not many games you bowl seam-up all the way through. Wicket offered assistance, and swing as well,” he explained.

NZ lost their opening games against Afghanistan and the Windies to make it tricky for themselves to progress in the tournament, however, Ferguson appreciated the support and the atmosphere in North America during the ICC showpiece.

“Hard to know on these wickets what’s a par total, we bowled well against Afghanistan and WI, but going down there ruined our World Cup,” he explained.

“The crowds have been amazing, over here it is a party all the time,” he signed off.

Both teams were ousted from the running for the Super 8 even ahead of the fixture and the win did nothing but salvage some pride for the Kiwis.

This is the best bowling figure for a man or a woman in the shortest format of the game as he one-upped Canada skipper Saad Bin Zafar, who claimed four maidens in as many overs against Panama and also claimed a couple of wickets.
