Southee picked up five wickets for 12 runs in 20 balls for Birmigham Phoenix against the Trent Rockets during the Hundred match played at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Monday.

Legendary New Zealand pacer Tim Southee was on fire for the Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred match against the Trent Rockets on Monday (August 12). During the match played at Edgbaston in Birmingham, the right-arm pacer picked up five wickets for 12 runs in 20 balls. He accounted for the dismissals of Tom Banton, Joe Root, Tom Alsop, Lewis Gregory, and Sam Cook to help his side restrict the Rockets to 118 runs in 100 balls.

The 119-run target was then easily chased down by Phoenix for the loss of four wickets in 93 balls. The figures of 5 for 12 by Southee are the second-best figures in the history of The Hundred Men’s Competition.

The video of Southee’s brilliant show with the ball is now going on the internet.

Reacting to the super show by New Zealand’s Test captain, one social media user commented, “Tim Southee creating records.”

“Guess I’ll be hunting down those highlights now, Southee’s on fire,” read another response.

This person requested Tim Southee to “come to RCB.”

“Tim Southee has the best outswing ability, the same ability was possessed by S. Sreesanth as well,” observed another X user.

This person referred to Tim Southee as a “legend.”

Apart from Southee, Chris Wood picked up two wickets for Phoenix. For the visitors, Alsop top-scored by making 51 runs from 37 balls, and Imad Wasim made a contribution of 29 runs.

In reply, Moeen Ali’s men rode on Ben Duckett’s 30, Liam Livingstone’s 30, and Jacob Bethell’s 38 to register their fifth win in seven matches played so far. With 10 points, they are third in the points table. On the other hand, the defeat on Monday ruled the Rockets out of the race to qualify for the eliminator.

Southee to lead New Zealand vs. Afghanistan

New Zealand have named a strong squad for next month’s one-off Test against Afghanistan and two-match series against Sri Lanka.

The majority of the squad is similar to the one that lost 2-0 to Australia on home soil earlier this year, with experienced quick Tim Southee once again named captain of a side that includes the likes of key batters Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson.

Southee will receive support from fellow fast bowlers Matt Henry, Ben Sears and Will O’Rourke, while the Kiwis have included Mitchell Santner, Ajaz Patel and Michael Bracewell as spin options alongside part-timers Phillips and Ravindra.
