Nepal Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane Acquitted of Rape Charges, Available For T20 World Cup Selection
The Patan High Court has acquitted Lamichhane, overturning the previous verdict of the Kathmandu District Court.

Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane on Wednesday had a sigh of relief after being proven innocent in an ongoing rape case. The Patan High Court has acquitted Lamichhane, overturning the previous verdict of the Kathmandu District Court.

As reported by setopati.com, the bench of Judges Sudarshan Dev Bhatta and Anju Upreti Dhakal overturned the district court’s verdict, freeing the leg-spinner of all charges.

“The district court’s verdict has been overturned, Sandeep Lamichhane has been acquitted,” the website quoted the High Court’s deputy registrar and spokesperson, Bimal Parajuli, as saying.

Meanwhile, Sportskeeda reported that Lamichhane shall be available for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. However, an official confirmation is still awaited. Nepal has already announced the 15-player squad led by Rohit Paudel but with the ICC rule of allowing the teams to make changes to their squad until May 25 it is certain that Lamichhane might get picked.

Last year in December, a bench of Kathmandu District Court found Lamichhane guilty of raping an 18-year-old woman. Later in January 2024, he was sentenced to an eight-year jail term for the same. The 23-year-old cricketer was fined Rs 3 lakh and was also ordered by the court to pay compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the victim.

Lamichhane was playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) for Jamaica Tallawahs when the court sentenced him to a jail term. The franchise released him with immediate effect as he returned to Kathmandu where he was arrested.

The High Court Government Attorney Office appealed the verdict at the Patan High Court on March 12, seeking maximum punishment against Lamichhane. On the other hand, the cricketer had appealed against the district court’s verdict at the Patan High Court.

On February 22, the high court allowed him to appeal against the district court’s verdict and stay out of the prison.

Although he was reconsidered for Nepal during the Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series at home last February, he was dropped for the World Cup League 2 tri-series in Dubai later last year before rejoining the side as an injury replacement.

Lamichhane has since played for Nepal in the ODI World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe last June-July, followed by the Asia Cup in August-September.

He has scalped over 100 wickets in over 100 white-ball matches for Nepal. He has also had a brief stint in the Indian Premier League with Delhi Capitals between 2018-20, bagging 13 wickets in nine fixtures.
