'Maybe Captain and Coach Thought Otherwise': Shakib Al Hasan Suggests Bangladesh Should Have Batted First Against India
Shakib al Hasan did not feel that the management came to the right decision of bowling first against India in the T20 World Cup 2024.

The veteran Bangladesh all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan disagreed with his side’s approach in the game against India in the T20 World Cup 2024 in Antigua on Saturday where they collectively decided that they would bowl first had they won the toss.

The all-rounder has a vast array of experience under his belt and using that he suggested that the trends indicate that the side that is batting first has seen a lot more success.

Shakib was quoted by Cricbuzz saying, “Personally if you ask me in the Caribbean it’s one or two games – when England chased that 180. Other than that batting first has been the trend for most of the teams and they have been very successful. So, if you look at the stats, I think, yeah, ideally you would have batted first, but maybe the captain and coach thought otherwise”.

Speaking about the thought process behind choosing to bowl first, Shakib suggested that the team might have looked to restrict the Indian team to a minimal score and knowing the target, Bangladesh’s batting could adapt their approach to it.

“We thought that we could restrict them in a reasonable way so that there is a score in our head and we know how we should go about when we bat. So maybe that’s the reason we decided to field first,” Shakib commented.

While this difference of opinion might suggest unrest in the dressing room, Shakib clarified that it is not down to the experience or seniority but the decision of the captain.

“These are not the issues of experience or seniority. When there is a leader, a captain, it’s his decision. If we would do well, the credit would go to the captain. If we did badly, we questioned the decision of the coach and captain. It’s normal. It seems very reasonable to me. But that’s how it goes,” Shakib added.

Bangladesh went on to lose the game by a margin of 50 runs and their tournament is more or less over having lost two games out of three, thus meaning that they cannot qualify for the semi-finals. They will play their final game against Afghanistan on June 25 at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown.
