Remember the scenes from the 2011 World Cup final when India were on the verge of a historic win against Sri Lanka and the 30,000-plus people at the Wankhede Stadium were singing AR Rahman’s famous patriotic number ‘Maa Tujhe Salam’ in unison? Well, it was recreated on Thursday night when Rohit Sharma’s Team India was felicitated at the iconic venue for getting crowned as the T20 World Champions.

The men in blue on Thursday arrived in Mumbai with the trophy and performed a victory parade on the overcrowded streets of the city. Later, a jam-packed Wankhede welcomed them and Rohit Sharma and Co were awarded a prize money of Rs 125 crore by the BCCI. Following the presentation, the world-cup-winning Indian squad performed a victory lap in the field while grooving to the tunes of the song, ‘Vande Mataram’.

It was a different vibe altogether. Kohli and Pandya led the charge, while the entire team followed him. All of them felt the mood and sang the song along with the crowd before heading towards the dressing room.

Mumbai Halts for Victory Parade

South Mumbai witnessed massive traffic snarls as a sea of people converged at Marine Drive to witness the victory parade of the Indian cricket team on Thursday evening.

Trains arriving at Churchgate on the Western Railway network and the sprawling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the last station on Central Railway’s vast route, were crowded as people from various parts of the metropolis made their way to the southern tip right from the afternoon of the metropolis to watch the parade.

Stations and roads reverberated with slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai‘, ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘India India’ as Tricolour-waving and blue jersey-clad crowds braved the intermittent rains to catch a glimpse of the team that had brought T20 cricket’s most coveted prize home after more than a decade.
