Rohit Sharma began his T20I career by winning world cup title in 2007. Cut to 2024, he brought an end to his India T20I with a second world cup triumph but this time as a captain – a dream career that started and ended with world titles.
Rohit is a serial trophy winner. He’s led Mumbai Indians to five IPL trophies as captain and overall has won the T20 league six times – once as a player when he represented the now defunct Deccan Chargers.
Besides that, he’s also won a couple of Asia Cup titles as captain too. Having retired from T20Is, Rohit though has no plans of slowing down and has now set his eyes on leading India to more triumphs with a couple of ICC events lined up for the next year.
At the start of 2025, India will be taking part in the Champions Trophy and should they qualify, could also play in the final of the ICC World Test Championship.
“There is a reason I won five IPL trophies,” Rohit said during an event in Mumbai on Wednesday. “I’m not going to stop, because once you get the taste of winning games, winning Cups, you don’t want to stop and we’ll keep pushing as a team. We’ll keep striving for better things in the future.”
BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already announced Rohit will continue leading India in ODIs and through the end of current WTC cycle.
Rohit said India’s success across formats has been heavily influenced by the likes of Rahul Dravid, Ajit Agarkar and Jay Shah.
“It was my dream to transform this team and not worry too much about the stats, the results, to make sure that we create that environment where people can go out there and play freely without thinking too much,” Rohit said.
“That is what was required. I got a lot of help from my three pillars, who are actually Mr Jay Shah, Mr Rahul Dravid (and the) chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. That was very critical for me to do what I did and obviously not to forget the players, who came in at different points in time and helped the team to achieve what we achieved,” he added.
