India is set to reignite its Test rivalry with New Zealand in a three-match series commencing on Wednesday in Bengaluru. However, persistent rain in the Karnataka capital has already delayed the start of play on the opening day.
Currently leading the World Test Championship points table, a series victory would significantly bolster India’s chances of securing a spot in the final. In contrast, New Zealand, the inaugural WTC champions, find themselves in sixth place with only three wins from seven games. Their recent 2-0 series defeat to Sri Lanka has left them searching for form.
India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 1
Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg believes that New Zealand face an uphill battle against India on home turf. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Hogg predicted a dominant series win for the hosts.
“The way New Zealand played in Sri Lanka, I don’t think they’ll be able to turn things around and fix their deficiencies batting against spin,” Hogg stated. “That’s where India are going to take the Test series away easily.”
New Zealand’s Inexperienced Pace Attack a Concern
Hogg highlighted New Zealand’s lack of experience in the pace department, with former captain Tim Southee being the only veteran presence. While acknowledging William O’Rourke’s impressive performances against Sri Lanka, Hogg believes the young quick is yet to reach his full potential. The injury to Ben Sears further compounds New Zealand’s woes.
“William O’Rourke has a big heart and doesn’t give in,” Hogg acknowledged. “He just comes in ball after ball, not trying to bowl with sheer pace. I’m hoping Ben Sears gets a go because he is a tall, quick bowler who can add variety against India with his extra height and bounce.”
With India’s dominance at home and New Zealand’s recent struggles, the stage seems set for a compelling series. Whether the Kiwis can overcome the odds and pose a challenge to the hosts remains to be seen.
